Effect of mechanical closure of dead space on seroma formation in modified radical mastectomy

چکیده
Materials and methods: Patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy were separated into 2 random groups of 50 according to wound closure methods: either flap fixation/mechanical obliteration or standard wound closure group. The fluid that collected under the flaps assessed at the physical examination after the drains were removed was accepted as seroma. The patients’ characteristics, duration of the operation, drainage amount, removal time of the drains, flap necroses, and infection were recorded. The groups were compared via chi-square and Levene tests. Significance was determined for P ≤ 0.05.

Quilting after mastectomy significantly reduces seroma formation
Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women.[1] Simple mastectomy is a common surgical procedure that is used in the management of breast cancer. Seroma is one of the most frequently encountered complications following mastectomy and is a serous fluid that accumulates in the space between the skin flap and underlying tissues. It may cause significant morbidity, ...
متن کاملA prospective randomized study on management of suction drains in patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy
Background and Objectives: Seroma, a subcutaneous collection of serous fluid, is the most common morbidity after modified radical mastectomy. Closed suction drains are used for drainage of serous fluid after MRM to obliterate the space beneath skin flaps and thus to decrease seroma formation. Amongst various factors that influence the amount of postoperative drainage, the negative suction press...

BACKGROUND Seroma formation is the most frequent postoperative complication after breast cancer surgery. We carried out a study to investigate the effect of various demographic, clinical and therapeutic variables on seroma formation. BACKGROUND Breast cancer represented 35.1% of total female cancer cases in Egypt. Seroma is one of the most serious and common complications of mastectomy and axillary dissection with incidence between 15 and 81%. Seroma formation delays wound healing and increases susceptibility to infection, skin flap necrosis, and persistent pain as well as prolonging convalescence. Therefore, several techni...
متن کاملSurgical resection for persistent seroma, following modified radical mastectomy
BACKGROUND Seroma formation following modified radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection for breast cancer is a most common wound complication. In our experience seroma occurs in approximately 50% of patients undergoing mastectomy. Postmastectomy seromas usually vanishes within a few weeks after operation. CASE PRESENTATION In this report we present the case of a 73 year old woma...
